Bangladesh's PM Sheikh Hasina Resigns and Flees to India....

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh resigned and fled to India after weeks of intense protests and escalating violence. This marked the end of her 15-year rule and has thrown the country into further instability.

The unrest began with peaceful student protests in June 2024, primarily demanding the abolition of a controversial quota system in government jobs that favored family members of veterans from Bangladesh's war of independence. These protests quickly evolved into a larger movement against Hasina's government, accused of corruption, electoral fraud, and increasing autocracy.

By mid-July, the protests had become violent. Reports indicate that nearly 300 people had died due to clashes with security forces. The situation worsened when, on August 4, 2024, thousands of protesters stormed Hasina's official residence. This led to the deaths of nearly 100 individuals, including 14 police officers.

On August 5, 2024, Hasina resigned and fled to India via a military helicopter. Her departure was broadcast on national television, showing her boarding the helicopter with her sister. General Waker-uz-Zaman, the country's military chief, announced that the military would seek to form an interim government and promised an investigation into the violent crackdowns on protesters.

The military, led by General Zaman, has taken a central role in addressing the crisis. Zaman pledged that no further violence would be allowed and promised to investigate the killings during the protests. However, the formation of an interim government remains uncertain, with demands from student protesters for their representation in any new administration. There is also significant public and civil society pressure for a civilian-led interim government rather than a military one .

Hasina's resignation has plunged Bangladesh into a period of uncertainty. The country faces multiple crises, including high unemployment, widespread corruption, and the impacts of climate change. The immediate challenge is establishing a stable interim government to restore order and address the underlying issues that sparked the protests .

Escalation in the South The Israeli military has recently established a new security buffer called the "Morag Corridor" across southern Gaza. This corridor aims to sever the city of Rafah from the rest of the Strip, intensifying pressure on Hamas. The move has raised concerns over further displacement and access to humanitarian aid. Rising Casualties and Displacement Gaza’s Health Ministry reports over 50,000 Palestinians killed since the escalation began in October 2023, with a significant number being women and children. In just the past two weeks, over 280,000 people have been forced to flee their homes due to renewed fighting. The situation on the ground remains dire, with limited access to clean water, electricity, and medical supplies. Aid Workers Targeted The risks for human...
